Travel During Covid-19 Outbreak In Sydney Makes Mockery Of Australian Quarantine System
So – in case you are unaware, more than 9000 Victorians were gallivanting around Sydney last week with hundreds of active – infectious Covid-19 cases in the Sydney community. [Ref. Heraldsun.com.au]
ALL OF THOSE 9000 – vaccinated or not – were warned of a possible border closure and have been allowed back into Victoria before the deadline. On arrival, they must simply home quarantine. Additionally, there were 200-300 / day people moving across the border to Victoria and elsewhere while the cases were increasing in Sydney. Similarly, they are supposed to self isolate at home.
Fine. Mitigate some risk.
Why then, at the same time, do FULLY VACCINATED VICTORIANS returning from another country – some with fewer cases / 1000 than Sydney, need to pay AUD $3000 and be locked up like prisoners in a hotel??
They should be allowed, like returning Victorians from Sydney, to home quarantine.
There is a LESS risk by far from the fully vaccinated. At least they have had a PCR test before leaving, on arrival into Oz, and they’re fully vaccinated anyway so the chance of transmission is extremely small! [Ref. CDC USA] To be absolutely certain, a PCR test again before they finish home isolation, fine.
Instead, they read the Australian newspapers from their hotel prison cells and shake their heads at the illogic, idiotic – arbitrary rules, and incompetent decision-making of Australian authorities.
Their flights now cost them enormous sums to return to Oz, (up to $40,000 from the UK and often near $20,000 from North America ) only to be treated on arrival now with zero logic and sky-high inequality.
Any way you look at it, It makes no sense

When Covid-19 was pretty much eliminated from the community within all of Australia, hotel quarantine – for unvaccinated travelers – at least had some form of merit in relation to what was going on in the big picture. Recent outbreaks – the largest in Sydney – have changed the dynamic. The cat is out of the bag in terms of elimination, vaccinations are available now and a large risk is already mitigated with many of the extremely vulnerable ( Elderly ) fully vaccinated.
It makes no sense to discriminate and penalize fully vaccinated Australians returning from overseas whilst at the same time allowing many thousands more potential carriers to simply self isolate at home.
This Pandemic Is Fluid. Government Policy Needs To Be Adaptable – And Quickly!
Victorian Premier Dan Andrews has recently capped International arrivals at no more than 500/ week in the Australian state of Victoria. So by allowing 9000 plus to arrive from Sydney in the space of a few days, that’s 18 weeks’ worth of more risky arrivals from Sydney in one fell swoop, just to home isolate, no monitoring, no repeated tests, no control.
By mid-November a similar number of Victorians from overseas will have arrived, many fully vaccinated and far – far less risk. They, however, will need to pay an exorbitant airfare, get treated and tested like they have the plague, and then be forced into hotel prison for 14 days & pay another AUD $3000 for the privilege.
This pandemic is fluid. Government policy needs to be the same, or are they just too incompetent to change policy to something logical and meaningful, along with the changing circumstances.? So far it appears that way.
Fully vaccinated overseas arrivals should be allowed to home quarantine now, not ‘Trialed’ in September or ‘Maybe’ in 2022. They are already significantly less risk than interstate border travelers, and being openly discriminated against.
